The Appalachian Literary Arts Festival invites artists to submit original visual work inspired by Appalachian literature for this juried exhibition at the Rowan County Arts Center in Morehead, KY.

Open to artists of all levels

Two divisions for awards: Adult and K-12 Students

Artists may submit 1-3 worksNo submission fee
What is Reverse Ekphrasis?
Ekphrasis is writing inspired by art. Here, we reverse the process—inviting artists to create visual work inspired by literature.
Jury Process
All submissions will be reviewed by a panel Selected artists will be notified by email Accepted works must be hand-delivered to the Rowan County Arts Center
Requirements
Each submitted artwork must:

Be directly inspired by a specific work of Appalachian literature

Clearly List the title and author of the literary work used as inspiration

Be original work created by the submitting artist (No AI-generated art will be accepted)

Be available for in-person drop off if accepted
Submissions must include:

Completed submission form

High quailty digital image(s) of artwork

Title of artwork, medium, and dimensions
-
Title and author of the literary work(s) that inspired the piece

Acceptance Notification: July 17
Artwork Drop-Off: July 22 - 29
Exhibition Dates: August 3 - 30
Closing Reception: August 28
